German chamomile essential oil - Matricaria recutita

The UK grown flowers are harvested in June and September and steam distilled to produce a high quality essential oil.

The dark blue colour of this oil is caused by the presence of a high concentration of chamazulene which is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties.

Animals have selected German chamomile when they have symptoms associated with itching and heat.

Properties: German chamomile essential oil is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties. The main constituent of German chamomile is a naturally occurring profen.

Horses with allergies resulting in itchy skin, bumps and eruptions, often select German chamomile which is thought to relieve the itch and cool the skin.

When applied to the skin, the characteristic inky blue colour of the chamomile is absorbed as it is needed until the skin stains blue, signifying enough has been applied.

Other conditions where horses often select German chamomile often end in -itus, such as laminitis, colitis etc, with the exception of cystitis where yarrow is often preferred. German chamomile is also favoured by horses when they have stomach disorders, such as ulcers, especially when the cause is nervous in origin.

Principle constituents: chamazulene, alpha-bisabolol, bisabolol oxides, 1,8-cineole.

Precautions:  generally held to be non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing.
